Quartz Worktops with Belfast Sinks: A Design Guide
A Belfast sink in quartz is one of the most popular combinations in UK kitchens. The deep, square-fronted ceramic sink paired with a smooth quartz surface creates a look that is both traditional and practical. Here is what you need to know about the installation.
Undermount vs Sit-On
Belfast sinks can be mounted in two ways with quartz worktops:
Undermount (Recommended)
The sink sits beneath the worktop with the quartz edge visible around the cutout. Water and crumbs wipe directly from the surface into the sink. This is the cleaner, more hygienic option and the most requested configuration at Quartz Store.
Sit-On (Traditional)
The sink sits on top of the cabinet with the worktop cut to meet it. The front of the Belfast sink remains exposed. This is the more traditional approach and requires precise cutout alignment.
Support Requirements
Belfast sinks are heavy. A standard 600mm Belfast weighs 25-35kg empty, rising to 55-65kg filled with water. The supporting cabinet must be reinforced. Our fitting team checks cabinet structural integrity during the site visit and advises on any additional support needed.
The quartz worktop does not bear the sink weight — the cabinet and a dedicated sink support frame do. The worktop cutout simply creates the opening.
Cutout Details
The sink cutout is CNC-machined from your digital template measurements. It is included in every Quartz Store price — no additional charge. The cutout is sized 2-3mm larger than the sink rim to allow for silicone sealing.
Drainage Groove Positioning
Drainage grooves (shallow channels machined into the quartz surface) direct water towards the sink. Position them on the side where you will stack washed items. Most UK kitchens place grooves on the left of the sink. They are machined at a subtle gradient — functional but not visually dominant.
