Kitchen Island Worktops: Size, Cost and Material Guide

Our 2-slab quartz option covers most UK kitchen islands for £2,890 fitted. That includes templating, CNC fabrication, delivery, and professional installation — the same all-inclusive approach we apply to every Quartz Store order.

Standard Island Sizes

Most UK kitchen islands measure between 1200mm x 600mm (compact) and 2400mm x 900mm (large). A single quartz slab covers islands up to approximately 3000mm in length. Beyond that, a join is required — our colour-matched adhesive creates a near-invisible seam.

Common Configurations

  • Compact (1200 x 600mm): Suits galley kitchens with limited floor space. Single slab.
  • Standard (1800 x 900mm): Room for prep and 2 bar stools. Single slab.
  • Large (2400 x 900mm): Seating for 3-4, prep zone, and potential sink or hob. May require 2 slabs.

Overhang for Seating

If your island includes bar stool seating, allow a minimum 300mm overhang. 350mm is more comfortable. This overhang needs structural support — steel brackets or a timber frame beneath. Our fitting team assesses this during the site visit and advises on the most suitable approach.

Island Worktop Costs

From Quartz Store:

  • Single slab island: from £1,920 fitted
  • Two-slab island (L or large rectangle): from £2,890 fitted

These prices include overhang support assessment, cutouts for any sinks or hobs, and all edge profiling.

Material Choice for Islands

Islands take more visual prominence than worktops along walls. They are seen from all sides. Quartz delivers a consistent appearance across the full surface — no colour variation between slabs, no natural fissures to navigate. For a feature piece, this consistency is a genuine asset.
